Our first Special Brü of 2021 is a celebration of the work of female coffee producers, from whom we sourced 100% of this blend. As part of our commitment to sourcing at least one third of all our coffee from female farmers as part of our Female Producer Program, this winter’s Special Brü is a great example of what is to come at Caravan in the new year and beyond.

A blend of two parts, the first half comes from a new project underway with our long time partners, Raw Material, a social enterprise coffee importer. With the support of Raw Material, we’ve been working with producers in the Risaralda region for a number of years now, whose coffees are a frequent feature in our blends. This year we are buying additional volumes from a newly organized group of female producers from the communities of Santuario and El Aguila, towns located in the department of Risaralda. Caravan will provide an additional premium for quality, as well as 10p per kilo to offset the additional costs faced by female coffee producers. This is our very first lot from the new women’s group, and it already blew past our expectations on the cupping table: clean, sweet, and well balanced, this coffee is an all-rounder which foretells great things to come.
The second half of the blend comes from a new relationship for Caravan, and one which we’re very proud to present. This lot was grown by members of Cooperative Agraria Frontera San Ignacio, or COOPAFSI for short (if the name sounds familiar, that is because we featured a different lot from COOPAFSI in our recent Xmas Brü). The municipality where the coop’s 330 members reside is an up-and-coming region for coffee in South America, located in the valley between two fingers of the Andes as they stretch across the border into Ecuador. This remote area is home to many protected species, including jaguars, peccaries, and spectacled bears, who are regularly spotted on the farms of COOPAFSI’s members.
Proud stewards of this fragile Andean ecosystem, COOPAFSI see themselves as protectors of the forest, with many of their farms located in the buffer zone of protected land. As part of their efforts to safeguard the remaining habitat of the endangered spectacled bear, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this lot (and others like it) will be donated to local preservation efforts. In addition to this important environmental work, this lot was grown by just four women, who processed their coffee in a unique style which is very rare in Peru – anaerobically fermented and dried in cherry in the natural style, a difficult method which the four women decided on in order to accentuate the fruit and floral characteristics of their coffee.
BREWING GUIDE
Special Brü, our seasonal blend, is roasted for easy extraction across many brew methods – including espresso! For filter, we recommend a ration of 60g coffee to 1 litre of water, adjusted for size. For ‘spro, try 18g of coffee to 40g of liquid, at 30-32 seconds.
